Postmodernism has challenged modern history and archival science. While historians partly accepted the post-modern ideas by expanding the area of research and adopting novel methodologies, they have not agreed on the skeptical criticism on the essence of history. This tendency was even stronger in Korea. Postmodernism has deepened the understanding of the nature of archives by questioning its objectivity and neutrality. Expansion of research areas in history based on postmodernism necessarily brought about increase in using archives and a new way of interpreting and narrating historical data.
Establishment of National Archives and Records Service, enactment of Record Management Act and installment of innovative record management system in Roh Moohyun’s administrative have all contributed to development in archival science in Korea. History and archival science will need to work on reconciling historical issues, advancing democracy, overcomingnational division, cultivating historical consciousness, deepening the theoretical knowledge on new history, utilizing and preserving private records, recording memories, realizing the power of records and archivists, building archives that meet the needs of new history, screening and assessing preserved records and seeking various techniques.
