Youngnam scholars' anti-heresy discourses in the late Joseon had been generally regarded as exclusivism rejecting heterodoxy or exclusive fundamentalism. However, 1 suggest that they must be reevaluated from the viewpoint of inclusivism defending orthodoxy or introspective fundamentalism. After the Catholic Persecution of 180l(辛西敎옮k) , their inclusivism defending orthodoxy was changed into the exclusivism rejecting heterodoxy. It was a mainstream in the Gyeongsang Province during the late Joseon, but inclusivism coexisted with exclusivism in the same period. From the perspective of inclusivism defending orthodoxy or introspective fundamentalism, heresy including Catholicism was not an evil religion which ought to be eradicated completely, but a sort of heterodox teaching to be corrected. In contrast, exclusivists denounced Catholicism as paganism worse than heterodoxy. In their opinion, heterodoxy was an object of reformation, but paganism was an object of extermination. Therefore, they believed that severe punishments must be imposed on the pagans like Catholic believers. After the French campaign against Korea in 1866(丙寅洋擾), the exclusivism rejecting heterodoxy was changed into the realism rejecting Western civilization. From the latter point of view, Western civilization was a sort of evil civilization that would drive some selfish private desires. Finally, Youngnam scholars' anti-heresy discourses turned to realism.
