This essay explores how a literary work in the early modern age does a role to question the custom of separating man and animal. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is very fit to look into the question. Because it was written in the late Renaissance when the idea of the time comes to a head and goes over to the time of reason in the modern, and is the only drama that deals with a real figure of animal among Shakespeare’s works. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we can read three dimensional contrasts: spatial, abstract, and ideal. The first one is the contrast between a space of law in Athens and that of nature in the wood, the second is formed between the world of humans and that of fairies, and the last contrast is an ideal division between humanity and animality. The three contrasts, in overlapping one another, enforce but simultaneously interrupt other’s boundaries. We can see the climax of such an interruption in Bottom’s line on his dream. He expresses all the outside of human world as a dream, so his dream provides us the sense of human world in the early modern era. Bottom’s dream is that of a human being and simultaneously of an animal─it presents the world of a not-yet divided world between men and animals.
