In this study, for fault detection of triple inertial sensors, we propose a method to design residual signals, which are a type of index signals to detect faults. First, we set up a signal model that includes bias faults and noise variance changes. To detect abnormal signals that are driven by faults, we considered several alternatives to residual signals and analyzed the statistical properties of these alternatives. Second, to compare the detection performance for bias faults, an index, the ratio of mean value to noise standard variance, is derived. Using these analyses, better alternatives have been proposed. By hardware tests, alternatives are compared and the proposed alternative has been shown to be better for detecting bias faults and changes in noise variance.
