Examining the Chinese preposition system from the perspective of word order typology reveals that there are not only prepositions but also postpositions within it. The so-called “locative postposition” is the function word after the noun and from the grammaticalization of the simple directional word. For example, the “shang” of “shujia shang”, and the “li” of “keben shang”. In this article, firstly, the author investigate the structure of “NP + simple directional word” in the corpus and examine grammaticalization attribute of “shang, xia, qian, hou, li, wai, nei, wai”. Secondly, we examine semantic and syntactic roles of locative postposition. The semantic role of locative postposition words is to give the common noun in the front as locative or spatial meaning, but the preposition “zai”, which give the whole postpositional phrase structure behind a meaning of the place or space where the action take place, is confused with locative postposition. Thirdly, according to the meaning of the syntactic structure, the sentences including locative postposition words are also classified. For example, the existence, appearance, disappearance of a person or thing in the position or space; some cases occurrence in the position or space, and the description of it; whether or not a possibility exists in the position or space etc. Finally, in this thesis, we explain the use of locative postposition on syntactic structure aspect.
