Purpose: The stabilization stage of a traditional treatment program involves improving articulation intelligibility by adjusting rates of speech. However, there is no research that studies to what extent different instructions have an effect on speech rate. This research involves observation of changes in speakers" rate of speech based on different commands. The results of this research are intended to act as a resource for therapists in order to maximize the efficiency of controlling rate of speech. Methods: This research was performed in March 2016 at a university in Daegu on 58 students who do not have speech, emotional, or physical disorders. The experiment was based on reading out loud, and students were required to record themselves reading out loud along with performing different directions. After presenting seven random directions, students chose 2-3 directions for their experiment. This experiment was continued over a span of 3 days. The recordings were then analyzed for speech rate using a PRAAT program. Results: Ultimately, speech rate was shown to be the slowest when required to speak while writing the first letter with one"s finger. After that, speaking while writing the first letter with a pencil, speaking slowly, speaking with exaggerated mouth motion, speaking while circling the first letter, speaking while tapping the first word was shown to have the slowest speech rate. Conclusions: This research is to provide a foundation in improving the quality of articulation therapy and finding effective direction methods so that speech rate can be controlled - and thus, improving articulation intelligence. Future research should be focused on not only changes in speech rate, but also naturalness of speech so that even better therapeutic methods can be developed.
