The purpose of this study is to explore the iconic features and semantic properties of K orean Sign Language. The main results are as follows:
First, a cognitive linguistic exploration of the features and properties of Korean sign language has the potential to reveal properties shared with the spoken language and so maximize its communicative effectiveness.
Second, ‘iconicity’ refers to the phenomenon in which the structure of a language systematically resembles its meaning, this being an important feature of Cognitive Linguistics.
Third, sign language iconicity can be classified according to three categories: (1) im agic iconicity refers to signs that resemble the shape or action of the things being described; (2) structural iconicity refers to the formal properties of sign language that correspond to semantic structures. T his category can be sub-divided into iconicity of quantity, order, and distance;(3) figurative iconicity can also be divided into three sub-categories, in which the signs have either a metonymic (metanymic iconicity), metaphoric (metaphoric iconicity), or complex (complex iconicity a combination of the previous two types) correlation with their meanings.
Fourth, Korean sign language and its iconicity have both peculiarity and commonality with regard to the spoken language and its iconicity. The sem antic properties of sign language are as follow s: (1) metonymic iconicity is activized; (2) orientational iconicity is com m on in metaphoric iconicity; (3) imagic, structural, and figurative iconicity usually occur in a complex way.
Fifth, further research needs to be undertaken in examining the peculiarity and commonality of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, American, and North Korean Sign Languages, in order to discover and docum ent inter-cultural variations and phenomena.
