The goal of this study is to clarify types of leisure activities which have positive effects on life satisfaction, then to observe characteristics of participants of certain activities. Ordered logistic regression method is used to analyze effects of various types of leisure activities on the level of participants’ satisfaction, and multiple correspondence analysis is performed to visualize the relationships between characteristics of participants and types of leisure activities using Social Survey 2013 conducted by Statistics Korea. Main Findings are as follows: First of all, sports activities, travel, and creative activities that are characterized as active leisure have positive effects on the level of satisfaction while passive leisure activities such as watching TV programs including sports have opposite effects. Secondly, the results show that the privileged groups in terms of income, education and social status of occupations tend to participate in the active leisures rather than passive leisures. On the other hand, the under-privileged groups are more likely to participate in passive leisures. Also, multiple correspondence analysis indicates that leisure activities and other characteristics such as age, number of family members, and leisure companion have meaningful relationships. Therefore, this study points out that not only the amount of leisure time, but the types of leisure activities need to be regarded as an important factor in the subjective well-being research field. Furthermore, there are possibilities of existing leisure constraints to participate in active leisure activities depending on social class.
