This study aims to investigate the present method of teaching the meaning of ‘-gye ha-’ and suggest improvements to the method from a cognitive linguistic point of view. Currently in Korean grammar lessons, the causative construction, ‘-gye ha-’ is taught to have the meaning with an indirect causative verb as a long-form (syntactic) causative verb, and there has been much debate on this causative construction. Based on this, therefore, the suggested corrections to school grammar are summarized as follows:
Firstly, from a cognitive linguistic point of view, ‘-gye ha-’ is a single meaning construction. It has semantic dependency and recalls the causative frame, and its preceding combined roots (verb/adjective) have semantic independency.
Secondly, in school Korean grammar, ‘-gye ha-’ has not been taught as a polysemous construction. In particular, in this causative construction, the causer may actually do the action, so its causative definition should also be changed.
Thirdly, the meaning of ‘-gye ha-’ can be interpreted as an energy-chain problem based on the mechanical force, and in such a causative construction its meaning differs according to the degree of wight put on the causer, the causee, and the action/state.
In terms of traditional Korean grammar, the meaning of ‘-gye ha-’ is separated from the meaning of ‘-gye’ and ‘ha-’. Since ‘-gye ha-’ is a single construction with polysemy in the cognitive linguistic view, its teaching should be modified in school Korean grammar based on the discussion so far.
