I argue in this essay that Lawrence’s review of Georgian Poetry, written early in his career as writer and thinker, contains in embryo ideas Lawrence will develop throughout his life and reiterate even in Last Poems. These ideas, inspired by Lawrence’s extensive study of both art and science and by his newfound faith in himself as a result of his relationship with Frieda, center on the notion that the body is the central fact of our experience, the “quick of all growth, the seed of all harvest,” that the underlying reality of both the individual and the “circumambient universe” that surrounds and sustains that individual consists of a flowing of energy, and that art can lead us to a perception of this underlying “wholeness,” to a perception even of the “fourth dimension,” of “being” (see RDP 358). In this review Lawrence tells us that it is poetry, not science, that enables us to make a “slit in the umbrella” of convention and attain a glimpse of the whole (see I&R 109), and yet, ironically, many of the intuitions and assumptions concerning the nature of reality embodied in this early review are consistent with those of contemporary physicists and ecologists. I argue, in other words, that Lawrence’s conviction that all true insight arises from the “whole consciousness of a man” (LE&A 207), and his practice of relying on his own intuition (and analytical ability), enabled him to acquire insights into the nature of the universe that some contemporary scientists are uncovering only recently through experimentation and that these intuitions and assumptions about the nature of art and life were there from the beginning. In other words, the ideas he will develop in later critical studies (and embody in fiction and poetry) are there, at least by implication, in this early text. And the images he employs here will be employed in Last Poems to proclaim, once again, his faith in the body and its relationship to the “vital” energy that constitutes “reality.”
