The purpose of this study lies in examining the mineral and heavy metal content within hair of 20 year olds based on smoking status. Hair samples were obtained from 40 subjects in their 20 having non-permanent waves and non-hair color treated based on non-smoker and smoker status. The content between the hair of smokers and non-smokers was measured to determine heavy metals with toxicity (Hg, Pb, Al, Ba, Cd, As, U. Bi, Ti and Cs), high-occurrence essential minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, S and P), and low-occurrence essential minerals (Cr, Mn, Co, Fe, Cu, Se, Li, V and Mo). Statistical analysis of results was determine by SSPS Version 12 by dividing 40 the test subjects into a smoking group and non-smoking group (control group). As a result, the content of Hg among the heavy metals (10 contents) with toxicity was 0.710 ㎍/g and 0.520 ㎍/g, respectively, in the hair of smokers and non-smokers, showing a significant difference (p<0.05). The content of Ca among high-occurrence essential minerals (7 contents) was 649 ㎍/g and 955 ㎍/g, respectively, in the hair of non-smokers and smokers, showing a significant difference (p<0.05). Also, The content of Fe among the high-occurrence essential minerals (9 contents) exhibited a significant difference, showing 9.307 ㎍/g and 11.070 ㎍/g, respectively, in the hair of non-smokers and smokers (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between smokers and non-smokers in the other items from the above. Systematic plans therefore shall be established so that more individuals from the younger generation can stop smoking.
