In this study, we investigate the relative effects of research and development (R&D) investment and patent acquisition activities of exporting and non-exporting SMEs as well as manufacturing and non-manufacturing SMEs in Korea on their job creation by using 25,529 observations of 9,119 firms provided by the Korean Bureau of Statistics from 2009 to 2013. Results show that there exists a positive effect of Korean SME R&D activities on job creation, but this is only statistically significant for non-exporting firms. In addition, there exists a positive effect of exportation of manufacturing SMEs on their job creation and this finding is significantly positive for exporting manufacturing firms, but significantly negative for non-exporting, non-manufacturing firms. The results might imply that jobs are created more by non-manufacturing SMEs and/or non-exporting SMEs, although exportation still affects corporate job creation positively in recent years, after such a long, successful R&Dand exportation-driven economic development and growth policy by the Korean government. Furthermore, rather than R&D itself, the effectiveness of R&D activities supported by patent rights is a more crucial factor on job creation.
