As formative art through which beauty can be expressed on the human body, body art has infinite potential because unique and creative designs can be created by an artist’s personality. It is an artistic work that decorates the body using diverse objects and materials such as the expression of a unique ego and the designer’s creative expression. In fact, it is a form of visual art that reflects social culture in the expression of basic needs and at the same time emphasizes formative features. However, modern body art has more diverse applications as an art genre with formative features, expressing heterogeneous formative aspects, a creative experimental spirit and liberal art. As a result, the expressive characteristics of body art are more than just visual communication. It is needed to prove utility, which can assess the aesthetic features of body art by systematizing visual images through thorough analysis. Therefore, this study collected literature records and data on body art from 2010 to 2018 and analyzed its characteristics and types. In addition, it derived various numbers such as word centrality and density/connection degree of network and went through diverse analysis processes, using the semantic network analysis through visual images. As a result, this study suggests the advancement of body art as an art genre and its direction by visualizing relations among body art words as a network and exploring artistic values through trend analysis and objective interpretation. This paper aims to establish and develop academic grounds for body art based on the study results.
