A group home is a child welfare facility that protects and nurtures children and adolescents in situations wherein parents do not function properly in caring for their children. Although there is existing literature examining the psychological characteristics, behavioral problems, and school adaptation of adolescents living in a group home, studies on career decision-making of group home youth are lacking. There is an increasing number of adolescents leaving the group home yearly. However, there is a lack of in-depth analysis of which careers they decide to pursue and how they prepare for such careers. The purpose of this study was to explore the career decision-making of youth living in a group home based on interpretive epistemology. Ten third grade adolescents, who had to leave a group home after graduation, participated in qualitative individual interviews. The main findings showed factors that influence career decision-making of group home youth and which career they choose or not choose. In the process of career decision-making, the group home adolescents are affected by economic difficulties, but supported by social workers and friends in the group home. There are options such as attending college, acquiring a job for independent living, or postponing their decisions. This study contributes to suggesting practical implications for career decision-making of group home youth.
