The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between Chinese learning motivation and attitudes. Two hundred and seventy seven students from a Korean college participated in this study. This study, therefore, investigates how college learners’ L2 learning motivation(ideal L2 self, ought-to L2 self, competition predicts learning attitudes and their perception on Chinese people and Chinese culture. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, ideal L2 self played a crucial role in learning Chinese, but there is not a significant difference in L2 learning motivation among students. Second, learners generally have a very positive attitude toward Chinese, but as for Chinese culture, it has been shown to take a relatively ‘passive’ attitude. Third, a statistically significant difference was found in learning attitudes and their perception on Chinese people and Chinese culture depending on whether they have experience in living in Chinese-speaking areas or studied Chinese. Learners who have experience in living in Chinese-speaking areas or studied Chinese got a significantly higher statistic values in earning attitudes and perception on Chinese people and Chinese culture than the learners who haven’t had those experiences. Forth, there was a significant corelation between learning attitudes and learners’ perception on Chinese people and Chinese culture. These study results imply that teachers need to create and maintain students’ ideal L2 self, and the experience in living in Chinese-speaking areas or studied Chinese positively affect students’ Chinese learning motivation.
