In this study, the definition of practical aspects of Korean politeness expression as ‘the act of linguistic expression of modesty and propriety’ and the realization by type are studied. The politeness expressions can be divided into ‘listener honorific’ and ‘speaker’s moderation’ based on the principle of their function. The politeness expressions of ‘listener honorific’ are also possible with the phrase ‘relative honorific expression’ being the main one and using words that show courtesy or goodwill to the listener. This paper explains how each type of politeness expressions is used by adding additional expressions to the expressions listed in previous studies. The politeness expressions of ‘speaker modesty’ include ‘speaker shows a modest stance,’ which shows humility to the speaker or to the subject associated with the speaker, ‘contents of discourse change to a modest way,’ which humbly expresses the content of the discourse, and ‘adding hedge,’ which adds an incidental phrase that enhances politeness. In the future, categories related to politeness expressions (‘non-politeness expressions’, ‘impoliteness expressions’ and ‘too politeness expressions’) should be studied.
