Objectives: This study aimed to examine the direct effect of marital conflict on children"s executive function, emotion regulation, and problem behavior and indirect effects through maternal parenting behavior and children"s sleep.
Methods: A total of 467 elementary students from first to third grade and their mothers participated in this study. Data were collected through maternal reports.
Results: First, it was found that marital conflict did not have a direct effect on children’s executive function, emotion regulation, and problem behavior. Second, marital conflict had an indirect effect on children’s development through maternal parenting behavior, and through maternal parenting behavior and sleep problems. However, the indirect effects of marital conflict on children’s development through sleep problems were not significant.
Conclusion: Our study findings emphasize the importance of maternal parenting behavior in children’s sleep problems and development.
