Objectives: The World Health Organization (WHO) announced its “Global strategy to reduce harmful use of alcohol” in 2010. This global strategy focuses on 10 key areas of policy options and interventions at the national level. This study aims to understand and compare the current status of the strategy’’s implementation worldwide and in Korea. Methods: This study reviewed the “Global status report on alcohol and health” by WHO and the “Global Information System on Alcohol and Health.” Additionally, this study reviewed the relevant laws, press releases, and government publications to identify Korea’s status. Results: This study found well-implemented policy options and interventions in Korea in the following areas: “Leadership, awareness and commitment,” “Drink –driving countermeasures,” national legal minimum age for “Regulating the availability of alcohol,” and “Addressing informal and illicit production.” The strategies that need to be improved are: “Community action,” restrictions on alcohol consumption in public places for “Regulating the availability of alcohol” “Marketing restrictions,” “Pricing,” “Reducing the negative consequences of drinking” and “Monitoring and surveillance.” Additionally, restrictions for sales for “Regulating the availability of alcohol” has not been implemented in Korea. Conclusion: To improve Korea’s alcohol control policy options and interventions, “Pricing,” “Marketing restrictions,” and restrictions of sales for “Regulating the availability of alcohol” should be strengthened to match the global strategy implementation level.
