Purpose: This study tries to analyze the effects of protective motivational factors on exercise commitment and exercise participation behavior by approaching the perception of COVID-19 among users of sports facilities from the perspective of protection motivation theory.
Method: For data analysis, 484 data out of a total of 509 data were used. For data analysis, frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS 23.0. The significant level of hypothesis verification was set-up as α=.05.
Results: The results are as follows. First, the severity of the protective motive was found to have a negatively significant effect on exercise commitment, and the coping efficacy was found to have a positively significant effect on the positive effect. Second, the vulnerability of protective motivation was found to have a negatively significant effect on exercise participation behavior, and the coping efficacy was found to have a positively significant effect on exercise participation behavior. Third, exercise commitment was found to have a significant positive effect on exercise participation behavior.
Conclusion: In summary, this study indicates that protective motives are very important for sports facility users to continue their exercise participation behavior despite COVID-19. Accordingly, sports facility managers should frequently perform quarantine of the facility so that users can lower the awareness of the severity and vulnerability of COVID-19, and ensure continuity of operation by thoroughly following the quarantine rules when exercising.
