The purpose of this study is to develop an index to periodically grasp the perceptions and attitudes of Koreans surrounding the ocean and fisheries sector based on surveys and big data. This study reviewed major literature on index development and analyzed public survey data and SNS big data to derive the ocean awareness index system. Based on a scale-type item-based index and a keyword frequency-based big data index, two types of ocean awareness index systems were derived. The ocean awareness index from 2017 to 2021 was analyzed on a trial basis. As a result of the analysis, as of 2017, the index for 2018~2020 exceeded 100 points, indicating an overall increase. In the future, development of sub-indicators and questionnaire items, development of SNS big data utilization indicators, and weight design remain as follow-up tasks.
