Purpose: The purpose of this study is to grasp the experiences of family caregivers in the process of elderly dementia diagnosis. Methods: For this study, 13 family caregivers to care for elderly people diagnosed with dementia were intentionally selected. Data were collected through interviews from September 2016 to November 2016 and analyzed terms by Giorgi's phenomenological research methodology. Results: The results of this study showed that there are seven themes clusters and 24 themes of family caregivers experience in the process of diagnosis of dementia: 1) Misunderstanding as a result of aging; 2) Avoid management of abnormal behavior; 3) Feeling the limits of caring; 4) Heard detrimental news of diagnosed with dementia; 5) Falling into a whirl of emotion; 6) Accepting abnormal behavior as a disease called dementia; 7) Entered the path of new care. Conclusion: First, in order to care for demented elderly and family caregiver in the process of diagnosis, and to shorten the time from initial abnormal behavior to diagnosis, prevention education for dementia symptoms and active promotion are needed. Second, it is necessary to develop nursing interventions in the community where dementia caregivers can receive information related to dementia and information needed to care for the elderly with dementia.
