Due to the recently increasing international aviation demand, European Environment Agency (EEA) is considering to include air pollutants in the aircraft cruise emissions emstimation list, which only covered greenhouse gases. Furthermore, under the 2019 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, countries are recommended to submit the emissions of four air pollutants (CO, NOx, NMVOCs, SO₂) that act as ozone precursors and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. According to the National Air Pollutant Emission Inventory (CAPSS) of the Republic of Korea, the annual NOx emissions of the aviation sector have been increasing by approximately 6% each year from 2007 to 2019. Consequently, it would be necessary to additionally estimate and manage aircraft cruise emissions of air pollutants in Korea. In this study, based on domestic flight route information, we developed a method to estimate cruise mode emissions applying Tier 3A emission factors of EEA. The study covers 15 airports, 26 domestic flight routes and 21 aircraft models. We extracted a total of 546 emission factors for 26 domestic flight routes covered by 21 aircraft models. Applying these emission factors, we estimated the aircraft emissions by flight mode during 2019~2021. The results show that the annual cruise emissions were approximately twice as high as the emissions of Landing and Take-Off (LTO) mode for the same period. It should be noted that international flight emissions were excluded from this study due to the limitations of activity data. However, future studies should include international flight emissions in the inventory to understand the domestic flight emissions accurately. And then we should utilize modeling in analyzing the flight emissions’ impacts on climate and atmosphere.
