This study begins by setting Japan as the other within the realm of popular culture, serving as the focal point of the research. The objective is to examine the evolution of discourse surrounding “Empire Japan” as an other within Korean society’s cultural domain. This study reviews the conceptual understanding of “imperialism” and “Empire Japan” and theoretical discussions regarding cultural imperialism theory, providing the analytical foundation. Regarding research content, an analysis of the discourse related to the opening of Japanese popular culture in 1998 and the Korean Wave phenomenon that occurred in Japan after 2003 was conducted.
This process revealed that the construction of discourse on "Empire Japan” takes on varied forms depending upon temporal and societal shifts. We examine the discourse on “Empire Japan” from the perspective of cultural imperialism, revealing its evolution influenced by changing trends and Korea"s economic and political advancements, ultimately leading to its gradual attenuation. As elucidated, the discourse on “Empire Japan” within popular culture represents a process of ideological reproduction. However, the Korean Wave phenomenon in Japan underscores a different dimension wherein “Japan” as an Other, as perceived in Korea, assumes a distinct national identity characterized by celebrity status through the Korean Wave. Ultimately, it seems reasonable to understand this as the operation of post-imperialist hegemony, breaking away from the hegemony of “Empire Japan”, which formerly operated as an ideological construct.
