The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of experience of attending science gifted schools on the students’ choice of a career in science and engineering field. Thus, the following four were analyzed using the survey data from 384 first-year students and 226 third-year students attending six science gifted schools: (1) the relationship between reasons for entering science gifted schools and satisfaction with entering the school, (2) changes in positive experiences about science, motivation for a career in science and engineering, and future desired occupations and university major that appear through the period of attendance, (3) the effect of positive experiences about science and motivation for a career in science and engineering on desired future university major, and (4) the relationship between satisfaction with science gifted schools and desired university major. The experience in attending science gifted schools did not increase the positive experience about science and the choice of STEM career. The satisfaction with the schools was generally high, but the effect on the desired university major was limited. Based on these results, the influence of education provided at science gifted schools on the science gifted students' advancement into science and engineering fields was discussed and the suggestions for improving science gifted schools were proposed.
