In Chu(楚) tombs, there is a unique funerary custom commonly known as Fen Xiang(分厢, compartmentalized chambers). By using wooden boards, the flat layout of the outer coffin could be divided into several chambers, storing different categories of funerary objects. To a certain extent, Fen Xiang imitates the tomb owner’s former dwelling, its structure approximately conforming to the palace architecture documented in texts of the Three Rites(三礼). Between each Fen Xiang, doors/windows(门窗) were designed by the Chu people to provide access among them. Archaeological excavations have shown that the design of doors/windows demonstrating a general evolution form simplicity to complexity, which can be categorized into four types: squared holes, symbolic doors/windows, painted doors/windows and realistic or lifelike doors/windows. As depicted in Chu bamboo manuscripts, doors/windows allows the spirit of the deceased to roam in the tomb freely. Through these two structures, the Chu people’s underground palace was accessible internally yet externally sealed, implying the spirit could continue living in the tomb while being prevented from returning to the secular world to cause harm. This indicates that the po (魄, the spirit) buried underground, is viewed as a spirit which could move freely. As a part of the post-Chu(后楚) culture, this funerary custom of designing doors/windows between Fen Xiang continued in the Chu region during the Qin(秦) and Han(汉) dynasties.
