The article begins by questioning why Korean religious scholars have not spoken out about significant social tragedies such as the Sewol ferry disaster and the Itaewon tragedy. The author explores the field of ‘disaster research’ or ‘disaster studies’, which may be unfamiliar to many religious studies students. The paper's first part introduces disaster research, discussing how the concept of 'disaster' has evolved and been defined and applied in various ways across different academic disciplines. Following this conceptual debate, the paper outlines the different approaches and standpoints currently competing in disaster research. It emphasizes that disaster research experienced a ‘cultural turn’ in the 2000s, bringing humanities to the forefront and leading to the establishment of ‘disaster humanities’ in South Korea and Japan. In the second part of the paper, the background and main research topics of disaster humanities in both countries are described, highlighting the lack of participation by Korean religious scholars compared to their Japanese counterparts. Lastly, the author proposes a new topic, ‘disaster ritual’, one of the latest research topics in disaster research in the West, to broaden the research scope of Korean religious studies.
