Due to the recent development of agricultural technology and the influence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, smart farms are attracting attention as a new alternative tosmart farm agriculture. Smart farms are agricultural systems that increase agricultural productivity and efficiency by utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data, and are known as an agricultural method that is easily accessible to young farmers who lack experience and skills. In addition, rental smart farms are attracting attention as a means to provide customized agricultural equipment and technical support to early entrants in agriculture and to ensure an initial stable agricultural start by minimizing agricultural and economic losses.
If young farmers easily enter agriculture through rental smart farms, positive effects can be expected in revitalizing the economy and creating jobs in the local community. In addition, if the living stability and agricultural foundation necessary for young people to settle in rural areas and live their lives, it is highly likely to contribute to maintaining the population and promoting vitality of the local community. This is expected to have a profound impact on the sustainability of local communities and balanced national development plans beyond simply improving agricultural productivity.
Accordingly, this study aims to find out the factors that rental smart farms affect young farmers’ development and regional settlement, and to propose directions for establishing future agricultural policies and regional development strategies.
In this study, a survey and in-depth interview were conducted with young rental smart farms located in Daegwallyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, to empirically analyze the impact of rental smart farms on young farmers’ entry into agriculture and local settlement.
