Purpose: This study examines the effect of TPP on Korea’s national competitiveness and suggests strategic implications whether Korea should join the agreement or not. Research design, data, and methodology: This study theoretically analyzed the expected effect of TPP and its ripple effect based on Porter’s diamond model, and found the empirical evidence by conducting a perception-based survey on one hundred-fifty Korean foreign subsidiaries. Results: First, the balance between supply and demand of resources, expected to be improved by the TPP, positively affects Korea’s national competitiveness. The acquisition of advanced resource would also be enhanced by the TPP but does not have a positive influence on Korea’s national competitiveness. Second, the investment on global and Korean market, increased by the TPP, positively affects Korea’s national competitiveness. Third, the global cooperation on GVC (Global Value Chain), expected to be encouraged by the TPP, strengthens the Korea’s national competitiveness. However, forward and backward linkages and business synergy creation, enhanced by the TPP, is not likely to improve Korea’s national competitiveness. Fourth, the soundness of business environment and the integration of rules of origin, enhanced if Korea joins the TPP, improves national competitiveness. Meanwhile, the global competition intensified if Korea joins the TPP does not have a statistically significant effect on national competitiveness. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the importance of TPP would be contingent on competitive advantages of Korean firms and industries. In order to take the advantage joining the TPP, Korean firms should put significant efforts to keep on innovating their competitive advantages.
