This study is based on 100m × 100m grid units, combined with ArcGIS spatial statistical methods, to conduct a comparative analysis of total building area and total population data, aiming to reveal different types of urban spatial changes. The urban space is classified into five categories: Growth, Cluster, Renewal, Decline, and Stable. Through a comparative analysis of spatial changes in four representative case cities, the study finds that the increase in Decline type grids is a common challenge faced by all the cities, indicating that Urban Shrinkage is becoming a widespread phenomenon. Further, by integrating economic, policy, and geographical factors, the study provides in-depth discussions of each case and proposes a series of governance policies tailored to different types of cities.
