The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nutrition education focused on individual daily energy requirements using Food Exchange System at a community health center. Nutrition education consisted of five lessons(40 min/lesson); ''Nutritional Management of Obesity'', ''6 Major nutrients & 6 Food group'', ''Knowing of the standard weight'', ‘Balanced diet intake’, ‘Healthy life habit(smart snack & eating-out choice, low calorie recipes, balanced exercise). The 60 overweight and obesity subjects(educated group, 30 subjects vs. non-educated group, 30 subjects) were selected for this study. After the nutrition eduction, the anthropometric characteristics, biochemical characteristics, nutrition knowledge, dietary attitude and dietary intake using 24 hr recall were compared with those before the education. The distribution of body mass index(BMI) (p<0.01) and Lean body mass(LBM) (p<0.001) were decreased. The positive effect on Fast blood sugar(FBS) (p<0.05) and Total Cholesterol(TC) (p<0.001) was shown with significant decreases in the educated group. The nutrition knowledge score and dietary attitude average score were increased significantly in the educated group (p<0.001). Also, there were significant changes in the type and frequency of meal and snack. In the evaluation of nutrient intake by Diatary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRI), the protein (p<0.05), vitamin A (p<0.01), thiamin(p<0.05) and Fe(p<0.01) were changed positively at the distribution of subjects about intake level. In the index of nutrition quality(INQ), the nutrition adequacy ratio(NAR) and mean nutrition adequacy ratio(MAR) were significantly positive in the educated group. In conclusion, it is possible to improve the control of overweight and obesity by the nutrition education focused on personalized daily needed energy and food exchange units.
