As the recent non-suicidal self injury is shared and spread through SNS, proper intervention in non-suicidal self injury is urgent. Although there is a need for studies on non-suicidal self injury in the adolescents, there are few studies conducted on the adolescents’ non-suicidal self injury. Especially, the self-harming adolescents appears to have complex problems such as emotional adjustment problems and family problems. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the influence of family, cognitive, and emotional variables on non-suicidal self injury for constructing complex treatment models.
The purpose of this study is to verify the double mediating effect of early maladaptive schema and emotion dysregulation between adolescents'' emotional abuse and non-suicidal self injury in adolescents. To examine the relationship of these factors, total 445 students, including 92 students of middle school and 353 students of high school completed self report measure of the Fundamental Assessment of Self-mutilation (FASM), Emotional Abuse, Young Schema Questionnaire-ShortForm(YSQ-SF), The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale(DERS). A total of 132 questionnaires were used for the final analysis, except for those who responded that they had suicidal intentions and those who responded insincerely. In order to examine the relationship of each variable and the double mediating effect, SPSS 21.0 and SPSS Macro PROCESS program were used.
The main results of this study are as follows. First, except for the relationship between emotional abuse and non-suicidal self injury, all variables(emotional abuse, non-suicidal self injury, early maladaptive schema, emotion dysregulation) had a statistically significant positive correlation with each other.
Second, early maladaptive schema had complete mediating effect between emotional abuse and non-suicidal self injury. Third, emotion dysregulation had complete mediating effect between emotional abuse and non-suicidal self injury.
Forth, early maladaptive schema and emotion dysregulation had complete double mediating effect between emotional abuse and non-suicidal self injury. On the other hand, the direct effects of emotional abuse on non-suicidal self-injury were not significant. These results suggest that the therapeutic intervention may be effective to change the early maladaptive schema and to improve emotion regulation ability to reduce non-suicidal self injury.
