With the official seal, the declarations of issuer on the official documents was the most remarkable property that distinguishes official documents from private ones. The declarations of issuer on official documents consisted of 'the office-marking'(着官; a marking of office by the officer or government office) representing that the official duty of government officer was responsible for the contents of the document and had the competence to come into effect, and 'the signature'(押) of the officer in charge of the duty. As the 'the office-marking' on the official documents particularly represented that the officer issued the document on his competence from official duty, on no private one, they should be clearly distinguished from the declarations of issuer on private documents just to express his position. 'The office-marking' primarily had a function to represent who the issuer was and that the document was examined by the officer as needed from the documentary administrations with the signature. For this reason, the official document had completed its form only when had the office-markings and the signatures, and then it could become effective. Therefore, we can regard the office-marking and the signature as the important part on the documents, for they came into effect of the official documents.
In this paper, as the beginning of study on the office-marking, I tried to analyze the aspect to record the marking of office on the documents issued by the Gyeongjubu(慶州府) adopting the documents of Dokrakdang as the principal material. The markings of major(尹) in Gyeongjubu(府) were represented correctly '府尹' or ‘尹’ without ‘府’, but were not found ‘官’ like on the documents issued by the 'gun'(ttl)) or 'hyeon'(縣). The major who wrote the signature marked the office, or the officer in charge who was entrusted from the major of Gyeongjubu marked the office before got the signature of major. Through that, I could realize that the marker of office was different with the characteristics of each document and the process to make out it.
On the other hand, it was most remarkable that the documents issued by Gyeongjubu had the marking of office written by the 'pangwan'(判官) together with the major's. By the early in seventeen century the office-markings, only found on the official documents of special administrative districts like Gyeongjubu, were wrote relatively correctly, but after then its form had gotten simple and the number of lines had not been kept well. Nevertheless, the pangwans in Gyeongjubu surely wrote the office-markings on the form, therefore we could see that on the documents in Gyeongjubu the office-markings written by pangwans had remained by 1671 when the government abolished the organization of pangwan. I think that the signature of pangwans was important on the form along with the office-markings but not necessary, for example, on the official documents in Gyeongjubu no signature of pangwans was not found.
In this paper, studying only the official documents in Kyeongjubu, I wrote briefly about the form of office-markings on the official documents issued by such administrative districts as bu(府)ㆍmok(牧)ㆍgun(郡)ㆍhyeon(縣), and I'm afraid I could not include all kinds of official documents in the subject of my studies. I will complement this weak point in next study.
