This study is to investigate the iconography of "Jooro" in the genre paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty in the context of cultural structure. Jooro was understood as a visual object and visual expression. And the iamge of Jooro was the synthetic result to express such an image itself, that is to say, the phases of the times of the late Joseon Dynasty.
Jooro is defined as the place where people sold the drink on which normally jars were on the mud-plastered bars. The korean taverns as well as inns for the travelers and traders in the genre paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty were the image of these Jooro's. which includes SiGooDangRo, the place where wooden table put on to sell drinks on market places.
It has been an important role to understand drinking areas in the Joseon Dynasty throughout the image of Jooro in the genre paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty. The most well-reflected piece for the image of "ChonJeomJooro" is 〈RoByonYaro〉 which the typical forges and Jooro painted by Hongdo Kim and Duksin Kim were presented. Especially, works by Duksin Kim have the most well-expressed aspects of "Ryo", "Suk" and "Hoo Gwan" presented in JooRye, including the roads, streets, houses, rooms. food and even storages, for travelers or guests. Furthermore, these works were presented as a virtual data of "TanMak", another word of "JooMak". That is to say, this can be another name of blacksmiths and "Yaro" which expressed with Jooro together. Furthermore, the most particular points in the image of Jooro in cities are turned out in Joosaguhbae by Yoonbok Shin. So to speak, while Ro in the countryside is just a kind of bar which cups and glasses are on, that in the cities is a kind of brazier where keep the fire under to heat the drink and the food.
The representation of Jooro painted by Insang Lee, Hongdo Kim, Duksin Kim and Yoonbok Shin in the genre paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty has been alive so far. Of course, it could not be the perfect form owing to the absence of reality, irrationality and ambiguous expression of one's feeling. However, this study wants to show that the past could be more abundant with these facts.
