In this study, how problem drinking by disabled people is correlatively related to their depression and health was investigated by referring to the third-year research data from Korea Welfare Panel Study. Also, whether this relationship applies consistently according to poverty levels of disabled people was investigated through multi-group analysis using structural equation modeling.
The results demonstrated that problem drinking produced a positive effect on depression and depression produced negative effects on health, while a direct relationship could not be established between problem drinking and health. Also, the structural relationship among problem drinking, depression, and health was shown to vary depending on their poverty level. To look at this in more detail, the relation between problem drinking and depression and the relation between problem drinking and health exhibited no variance among groups of different income levels. However, the relation between depression and health was shown to be particularly stronger in the poor population of disabled people, indicating that health risks due to depression are much higher for poor disabled people than non-poor ones.
