Tsuda Shoukichi’s studies on Japanese history has been called“ Tsuda history,” “Tsuda’s history of thought,” taking the leading figure in studying Japanese history. His academic work covered various fields of historical studies such as historiographical study, critical study of Japanese classics, historical study of Japanese national thought, study of the history of ancient Chinese thought, etc.. This study examines his critical studies on Japanese classics and the problems of perception in Koran-Japan relationship and of distorted view about ancient Korean history, which resulted from Tsuda’s study.
The characteristic of “Tsuda history” was in his poignant criticism on the prevalent method of historical studies focusing on folklore and social development. His studies on comparative started from thorough critical investigations of Kojiki (古事記) and Nihon Shoki (日本書紀). He drew his picture of East Asia based on the uni-race theory, and it seems that he had an ideal of the peaceful uni-racial nation without power authorities.
His thought has been molded by the atmosphere of the times, i.e. the war between Russia and Japan in 1905 and the Japanese colonization of Korea in 1910. Through the analysis of mythologies in Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Tsuda refused the theories that Japan and Korea had a common ancestor and that the Japanese emperor came from Korean blood. With these refusals, he offered the basis of studies on ancient Japanese history after the World War II, and it was his theory of the uni-race by which he refuted another theory that the ancient Japanese arrived from Korean peninsula. Tsuda’s uni-racial nation theory, however, bore a seed that could grow into the exclusive historical view centering on Japan.
Thus, before mentioning Tsuda’s historical positivism, it was a natural progress for completing the uni-racial nation theory that he tried to criticize the mythologies in Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and to draw a distorted interpretation about ancient Korean history. His negation of early historical records in Samguk Sagi (三國史記) and his extensive distortion about ancient histories may not be free from the blame of colonialistic interpretation of history.
