The present study reviewed not only the features and issues of the history education curriculum employed at elementary schools, but also, on the basis of the former, the content of the textbooks currently in use.
Comparisons were made in curricula between 2009’s and 2007’s. Some change was noticeable, though, in curriculum orientation in terms of reduction, integration, and new introduction of achievement standards.
First, the presentation focus is placed on historical figures. The fact that political figures were selected shows the current curriculum’s focus on political history. Yet, such presentation focus is more likely to promote a particular figure’s heroic image rather than to highlight the characteristics of a certain period through a depiction of him or her.
Second, the lifestyle presentation is likely to be diminished because the current achievement standards for lifestyle are being reduced or integrated as compared to the 2007’s revision. In addition, an in-depth study seems warranted on how to present history regarding lifestyle as the current textbooks suggest its problematic state.
Lastly, it is likely that an overall presentation focus on the nation history becomes central whereas historical figures are increasingly highlighted in political history in the 2009’s history- education curriculum for elementary schools. An effort needs to be made to expand elementary -school students’ perception of neighboring countries and the world even in teaching their own nation’s history.
