The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of circuit training on cardiovascular risk factors among sedentary workers. A sample of seventeen middle-aged males (n=9) and females (n=8) were recruited for this study. They participated in a 12-week circuit training program (50-min training per session and 3 sessions per week). The body fat percentage, muscle mass, and body weights as well as cardiovascular risk factors of the participants were assessed before and after training. We observed the followings: The percent changes of muscle mass and body fat composition among male participants were 1.5% and 4.8%, respectively, after training (p<.0.05). The right and left brachial-ankle pulse wave velocities (PWV) were significantly decreased in all subjects after training. For instance, right and left PWV were decreased by 5.5% and 5.6 after training, respectively(p<.05). The systolic and diastolic blood pressures also tended to decrease with training although the differences were not statistically significant. In conclusion, we observed a favorable effect of short-term circuit training on some of cardiovascular risk factors. Our study findings implicate that long-term circuit training might contribute to attenuating the risk of cardiovascular disease.
