This study examined the effects of seat height adjustments of bike while cycling training on muscular functions of the lower limb joints and evaluated the effects on exercise capacity. Fourteen collegiate men participated and were divided into standard seat (SS; n=7, 24.0±2.8 yrs, 79.1±8.6 kg, 177.7±4.0 cm, 25.0±2.6 kg·m-2) and low seat (LS; n=7, 27.0±2.1 yrs, 71.5±4.9 kg, 174.1±3.4 cm, 23.7±2.1 kg·m-2) groups. During cycle training, LS did 5% Lower than the standard seat height. They underwent training program of 3 times a week for 5 weeks. Before and after the program, muscular strength and endurance of the knee joint at 60 and 180°/sec as well as of the ankle joint 30 and 100°/sec were evaluated using Biodex. Window SPSS 12.0 was used for data analyses and values were expressed as mean and standard deviation. For comparisons between groups, one way ANOVA with repeated measures was employed. Statistical significance was considered when p<0.05. Analyses revealed that effects of 5% seat low adjustments below the standard height during cycling training on strength and endurance of lower limb joints were minimal. Collectively, the protocol adopted in this study did not induce any marginal effects on muscular functions. It can be suggested that seat height of bike can be adjusted with minimal concerns and further studies are warranted when using diverse range of bike seat height and longer training period.
