Ⅰ. Title
Perceptions and experience about obesity prevention and management: a social ecological perspective
Ⅱ. Objectives
 ■ The objectives of this research project is to investigate how multi-level factors affect individual experience and their perceptions related to obesity and to explore aspects of effective strategies for obesity prevention.
Ⅲ. Methods
 ■ Four districts in Seoul were selected based on their obesity rates. Research participants were recruited from these districts who were diagnosed of obesity within two years or had experience of weight control.
 ■ Photovoice assessments were conducted with 44 participants from two districts: one district with the highest obesity rates in Seoul and another with the lowest. In addition, two focus groups were conducted with 12 participants from two districts with about average-level of obesity rates.
 ■ Besides, two large-scale obesity management programs were reviewed following the ‘RE-AIM’ framework.
Ⅳ. Results
 ■ The participants in this study perceived obesity prevention and management as an either ‘health’ and/or ‘appearance’ issue. They have been trying various types of efforts to increase physical activity and improve eating behaviors. Such efforts were for both self-satisfaction and meeting the social expectations from their social relationships.
■ Multi-level factors could influence obesity management behaviors. Physical, social, and cultural environments affect behaviors related to obesity prevention and management greatly. The participants, however, believe that such environmental factors can hardly be changed with individual efforts. Thereby they think the efforts to control obesity are mostly individual responsibility to practice healthy lifestyles and behaviors.
Ⅴ. Conclusions
 ■ Social efforts are needed to make the supportive environments which can reflect individual perceptions of the factors affecting the obesity prevention and management.
 ■ Informed by the results in this study, planning for the development of coordinated multi-level approaches is recommended for obesity control. Such approaches should consider addressing both supportive environmental strategies and practical lifestyle guidelines for individuals.
