Neurotheology has emerged as a relatively new discipline in the religious and theological realm. It focuses mostly on the study of the biological(neurological) foundations for religious experiences and seeks to integrate in some manner cognitive neuroscience with religion and theology. Neurotheology, therefore, is multidisciplinary in nature and includes the fields of theology, religious studies, religious experience, cognitive science, and anthropology. Neurotheology holds at its center some questions as follows: How is it that human being’s purely physical brain has evolved the capacity to tap into the spiritual world? What areas of the brain play a role in mystical experiences? What neurological underpinnings compel human being to religious faith? These inquiries prove inherently important, as humanity’s understanding of both itself and its place in the world stands contingent upon the elucidation of such issues. It is undoubtedly with these implications in mind that James Ashbrook & Carol Albright(brain theology), Andrew Newberg & Eugene D’Aquili(religious-oriented neurotheology), and Nancy Murphy & Fuller group(nonreductive physicalism) embark upon their neurotheological approaches. Paradoxically, every step these research efforts take toward an understanding of the brain-God relationship ultimately serves to humble a limited science before the power of faith. Thus, this article will attempt to provide a comprehensive review of the three most prominent models and their implications for brain-based Christian education. This paper will first discuss three theories in neurotheology. Next this paper will deal with some important concepts of neurotheology respectively. In conclusion, this paper will provide their implications for brain-based Christian education.
