The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different intensity aerobic exercise training on metabolic syndrome risk factor and heart rate recovery in women with abdominal obesity. Twenty-four participants(age 39.1±4.0 years; waist circumference of =85 cm) were randomized to equal volumes of either continuous moderate exercise(60% of VO2max) or aerobic interval training(80% of VO2max) 3 times a week for 12 weeks. In addition, both groups were encouraged to maintain daily caloric intake and physical activity as usual. VO2max, heart rate recovery of 1 minute immediately after peak exercise test, waist circumference, blood pressure, lipid profiles, glucose, and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance were measured at baseline, at the mid-point and after the exercise program. The main results of the study were as follows. With respect to metabolic risk factors, the moderate-intensity exercise group had a significantly higher improvement(p<0.001) in waist circumference than the high-intensity exercise group. The high-intensity exercise group had a significantly higher improvement(p=0.022) in cardio respiratory fitness than the moderate-intensity exercise group. Regarding of training intensity, heart rate recovery response were tended to increase following the training programs. It was concluded that both moderate- and high-intensity exercise training would induce significant improvements in several of metabolic risk factors and heart rate recovery in women with abdominal obesity.
