In St. Augustine’s own time, Christian theology was not yet systematized. It had evolved in a fragmented manner, and to a large extent, dependent upon the terms of Greek philosophy. In order for Christian theological ideas to have currency at that time, they needed to be interpreted according to the terms that were available at the time, and one important person who undertook such work was Augustine.
The title of this paper is: “A Study on the Role of Philosophy in Augustine’s Systematic Theology.” The aim of this study is to examine how Augustine systematized his theology with the assistance of Greek philosophy. It should not, however, be taken as a comparison between Augustine’s theological ideas and the Greek philosophical notions from which he drew. It is with the aim of discerning how Augustine utilized philosophy in his systematic theology in mind that the bulk of the present paper is divided into two parts. The first part examines Augustine’s ideas in the light of positive statements pertaining to God’s nature, namely: the perfection and invariability of God, the personal
being or personhood and the invariability of God, and finally, the Holy Trinity. The second part of the paper consists in an exposition of Augustine’s ideas from the angle of the operations of God, namely: creatio ex nihilo (creation from nothing), evil as privatio boni (the privation of the good), and finally, salvation of the human soul as unity with God.
If we are able to ascertain how Augustine accepted and utilized the philosophy of his time as a legitimate means of systematizing Christian theology, his thought can no doubt serve as a model for establishing a mutually-edifying relationship between Christian theology and philosophy for us today.
