Pastoral supervision is a significant method through which a counselor-intraining grows as a person and professional. In the contemporary supervision practice in the field of counseling in Korea, however, a few common counter-productive learning experiences, such as chronic sense of deficiency, inferiority, and shame, of the supervisee are identified. A cause of counterproductivity is associated with one-sided relationship between supervisor and supervisee. To resolve this problem, this article focuses on examining the relationality in supervision from a pastoral theological perspective with a special attention to the relational humanness of Jesus Christ. The examination uncovers two pillars of assumption that upholds one-sided relational structure in supervision practice: The first one is ‘objectivism’ that is deeply embedded in the counseling theories; the other one is ‘authoritarianism’ that which value is culturally condoned in social relations in Korea. To challenge the myth of two pillars, this article proposes Kohutian theory of intersubjectivity as an alternative theoretical foundation for a transformed practice of supervision in that the supervisee can utilize it more safely and freely with dignity. The theory of intersubjectivity, supported by the concept of ‘emergence’ in the natural systems theory, implies that gaining of pastoral wisdom takes place more productively as the result of mutual exchange of intersubjective experience of each person in the relationship than unilateral imposition of one’s knowledge on the other person. The exchange of intersubjective experience of each person in the relationship system does not merely lead each one to the sum of each person’s knowledge but it gives a new space for wisdom to emerge from the mutual exchange, and all participants in this process can access to this source of wisdom. This finding attests that the supervision relationship that is characterized by mutual respect, intersubjectivity, and incarnational love functions better than the one that is characterized by objectivism and authoritarianism in order for the counselor-in-training to achieve goals of pastoral supervision.
