In Germany, People with a migrant background are 20% of the Germany’s population and thus, the social integration of immigrant is most important task in German society. Educational achievement is a central factor in the integration of immigrants’ descendants within the host society. In particular, educational attainment of the immigrant second generation is related with their ability to speak the local (second) language and with the integration of overall level of the labour market. Divergent levels of knowledge regarding the nature of the German educational system among parents have traditionally been translated into a corresponding the attainment gap. Despite the well-known shortcomings of the German school system in providing equal chances for the children of immigrants, Korean descendants exhibit extremely successful educational achievement in comparison with both other immigration groups and, surprisingly, even with German nationals. It should be noted that the parents’ generation suffered immensely during the 1960s. The generation was made to endure first the Korean War, then the subsequent developments, including a transition to authoritarian rule that was largely the result of economic hardship. Indeed, development issues were the primary focus of the post-war Korean regime. Due to these experiences of war and growth, this generation came to believe that growth occurs when individuals endure and work hard, and education came to be viewed as the single most important factor influencing life outcomes. In migration society, this belief is deepened, as the parents’ generation makes considerable sacrifices on behalf of their children. The children’s generation accepts this sacrifice and as a product of both a feeling of obligation to parents to harvest those past sacrifices and the prevailing ideology within migration society lionising the value of hard work, the aspirations are much higher, which should lead to positive educational outcomes.

독일에는 현재 약 20%의 이주민(with migration background)이 거주하고있고, 이주민의 사회통합은 독일사회의 중요한 과제이다. 그러나 이들은 현지인들에 비해 현격하게 낮은 교육ㆍ직업교육 이수율을 보이고 있으며 이것은 이들이노동시장에 진입했을 때 장애요인으로 작용하며 높은 실업율로 이어지고 있다. 이주민의의 낮은 교육성취의 원인은 독일 학교시스템의 구조적인 모순과 함께 언급되고 있다. 초등학교 과정이 끝나고 중ㆍ고등 교육과정에 진입하는 연령이 9ㆍ 10세이고 중ㆍ고등 교육과정이 다양한 트랙으로 나뉘며 이 트랙은 상호간의 진입이 현실적으로 불가능한 것으로 여겨진다. 이러한 이른 중ㆍ고등 교육과정 진입연령은 부모세대의 사회ㆍ경제적 지위가 자녀세대에게 이어지는 구조적인 모순으로 이어지며 이주민의 경우 더욱 더 두드러지게 나타나는 경향을 보인다. 독일 내 한국계 이민 2ㆍ3세들은 다소 불리한 독일 학교시스템 내에서도 다른이주민 그룹 뿐만 아니라 독일 현지인에 비해서 높은 교육성취도를 보인다. 이들의 높은 교육성취의 원인을 분석하기 위해 개인ㆍ구조적 요인과의 상관관계를살펴보았으나 부모의 학력 이외에는 상관도를 보이지 않았다. 이들 부모세대는60년대 이후 손님노동자 프로그램으로 독일로 이주했으나, 이들의 학력은 높았으며, 이것은 자녀의 높은 교육성취에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 작용했다. 또한, 부모세대는 한국전쟁과 성장을 동시에 겪은 세대로, 개인이 열심히 일하고 견디면발전할 수 있다는 ‘믿음’을 가진 세대이며, 교육이 가장 중요한 사회적 지위 상승의 요인이 된다고 여긴다. 이민사회에서 이러한 이들의 믿음은 더욱 심화되어 나타나며, 부모는 자신의 아이를 위해 희생을 감내한다. 자녀는 이러한 부모의 희생을 목도하고, 이러한부모의 희생은 아이들로 하여금 그들의 의무를 다해야 한다는 의무감으로 이어지며, 긍정적인 교육성취의 결과로 나타나다. 이들은 현지사회에 동화되기 위해 최선을 다해왔으며, 높은 교육성취라는 반대급부로 부모에게 보상한다고 해석할 수있다.
