This article investigates the rise of cosmopolitanism during the era of May Fourth Movement in China, under the perspective that intellectual trends and features of the movement were closely connected for explicating the historical trend of the contemporary intellectual thinking of China. The article attempts to take a fresh look at the practice on the May Fourth from the context of intellectual history, about how the basically transnational thinking of cosmopolitanism competed with the nationalism which was particularly influential under the semi-colonial circumstance of China, and about how it worked as a recognizing momentum for remodeling the contents of Chinese nationalism.
It carries out a two-fold analysis for further concrete investigation: first, defining the characteristic of Chinese cosmopolitanism so called post-war discourse it analyzes a diversified intellectual context during the formation of the discourse. Second, evaluating the significance and limitation of cosmopolitanism in building the relationship between (the remodeling of) China, (the remodeling of) the World, and Asia.
There are three major points that is emphasized in the article: first of all, cosmopolitan thinking during the May Fourth era of China played a critical role as a universal discourse like de facto zeitgeist, so much so that it continuously competed with nationalism and that it consequently supplied a momentum for rethinking nationalism. Second, the rise of cosmopolitanism before and after the May Fourth era was a reflection of the intellectual agenda of post-war discourse, a transition in history of civilization. Third, strongly reflected in the Chinese prospect of cosmopolitanism were the critical view against the western-dominant modern world and the willingness to participate in the post-war world order in a more leading manner. Fourth, the principle of self-determination which drove the May Fourth Movement was rather perceived as realizing public good of the world than as a self-expansion of nationalism of one nation-state, and it necessitated the core process of remodeling China based on the practice of democracy. Fifth, although it was paramount for evidencing the vision of cosmopolitanism, the perception of Asia was significantly lacking in Chinese understanding of cosmopolitanism.
