The century’s history of the March 1 Movement was also that of the research on the March 1 Movement at the same time. The research began along with the commencement of the Movement on March 1, 1919. Hence, there have been fruits of research on the March 1 Movement continually during the colonial and liberation periods. However, a chapter of the genuine and systematic academic research was opened through the collected papers in commemoration of its 50th anniversary. In such a context, based on academic outcomes in celebration of the 50th·70th·90th and 100th anniversaries of the March 1 Movement, this paper examined their characteristics and transitions of the academic arena.
The academic outcome of the 50th anniversary(1969) aimed to establish self-identity by historicization of the March 1 Movement based on the theory of the internal development in the name of the people. The academic outcome of the 70th anniversary(1989) manifested in three flows of the stances adhering to the existing argument, adopting the reformism and attempting a radically new order from a socialist perspective. The academic outcomes of the 50th·70th anniversaries had something in common in that they shared an identical plane of modernity. On the other hand, the academic outcomes of the 90th·100th anniversaries were debated on the postmodern horizon. The academic outcome in celebration of the 90th anniversary(2009) pursued probing into a potential for interdisciplinary research while accepting the postmodernism. The academic outcome of the centennial anniversary(2019) made an attempt to find out and generate a variety of novel subjectivity from the March 1 Movement via the Candlelight Protest Movement.
Research on the March 1 Movement for a hundred years aimed to open the time of a new event by combining itself with tasks of those days’ Korean society all the time. In this respect, it was an academic challenge to create Kairos.
