This essay aims to analyze the problem of representational ruptures caused by economic and linguistic bubbles in Timon of Athens by adopting new economic criticism as critical methodology. The similarity between money and language has long been recognized by literary critics, but the world financial crisis in 2008 served as a wake-up call for the urgency of economic criticism in literary studies. Previous scholarships have since delved into several Shakespearean plays such as The Merchant of Venice, Timon of Athens, and The Comedy of Errors with regard to performative powers deployed by representational symbols of money and language. Focusing on Timon of Athens, this essay wishes to demonstrate that monetary power can exert a far more serious impact than linguistic power. In addition, it argues that Timon’s tragic exit in the ending should be considered not merely a personal outcome of his misanthropy but also a social symptom caused by debt financing which will produce a disruptive percussion time and again in the history of capitalist development.
