This thesis attempts to investigate the East Asian aesthetics and ontology that appeared in the poetry of Jo Ji-hun’s Green Deer Poetry[靑鹿集] and Remaining Melody[餘韻]. The aesthetics and ontology of Hong Zicheng’s Vegetable Roots Discourse, which Jo Ji-hun enthusiastically read and translated from the Japanese colonial period, had the strongest influence on the aesthetics and ontology of Jo Ji-hun’s Green Deer Poetry. It was the attitude toward the life of the poet who retreated into nature and cultivated himself spiritually during the turbulent age. Jo Ji-hun found the Korean traditional style from Pungryu[風流] which meant appreciation for arts in nature. However, in Jo Ji-hun’s aesthetics, the expression of deep sadness could not be fully elucidated with Pungryu. The cause of his affliction was the loss of his country and his exile in nature. This sublimation of his grief appeared in his aesthetics. In this respect, Jo Ji-hun’s aesthetics and ontology was closer to that of Hong Zicheng. In addition, Jo Ji-hun’s masterpiece, “Monk’s Dance[僧舞],” showed the peak of his aesthetics. For “Monk’s Dance,” Buddhism made up for the afterlife and the transcendence that the Yangmism of Hong Zicheng’s Vegetable Roots Discourse could not contain. However, the most serious problem in the development of Jo Ji-hun’s poetry was that he seemed to have completely altered his perceptions after the 4.19 Revolution. As a result of reviewing the 4.19 poetry in Jo Ji-hun’s Remaining Melody, it was found that the poetry contained the Oriental traditional thought of justice[義] rather than Western democratic thought. For Jo Ji-hun, the 4.19 Revolution was the movement for justice[義]. His ideology was elucidated from the concept of justice[義] that originated from Confucius and was deepened by Mencius. In addition, the 4.19 poetry seemed to have been written under the influence of the reformist political ideology of Jo Gwang-jo, who was Jo Ji-hun’s ancestor in the early Joseon period. In other words, it was also shown in Jo Ji-hun’s 4.19 poetry that Jo Gwang-jo argued that the political reforms of Joseon were necessary to establish a morally ideal state. However, Jo Ji-hun was not a political subject of the 4.19 Revolution. Furthermore, the artistry of the 4.19 poetry was perceived as very poor. Therefore, the value of Jo Ji-hun’s East Asian aesthetics and ontology was subsequently completed in the Green Deer Poetry. In this respect, the significance of the influence of Hong Zicheng’s Vegetable Roots Discourse on Jo Ji-hun’s East Asian aesthetics and ontology was more significant.
