This study was aimed at examining and suggesting the housing poverty and gender safety issues in young women’s one-person households. The results are as follows: First, the economic burden of housing is greater in women than in men, with women showing a higher rate of monthly rent or housing-related monthly expenditure than men. Second, the majority of young women’s one-person households are paying for gender safety by their own, and they feel that real estate, renters and national policies are all not very interested in women"s safety. Third, gender safety issues in one-person households of young women appear to be quite serious indoors as well as outdoors in residential areas. As problems such as dating violence and threatening wall noise by neighboring men become more serious, women prefer expensive "women-only" residential facilities. Fourth, the gender safety problem of housing appears to accelerate the poverty of women along with a large gender wage gap. Young women’s one-person households pay more monthly rent than men"s mainly due to safety concerns, even though they have less capital than men.
According to a series of studies, the suggestions are as follows: First, as the gender wage gap is large and women spend more money than men because of safety, direct financial support for one-person households should be arranged from various angles. Second, it is necessary for the government to provide various cost support when installing emergency bells, self-defense products, security windows, and door movement monitoring apps for one-person households. Third, it is urgent to reconstruct and expand existing systems and facilities from a gender perspective. Fourth, it is necessary to ensure that (gender) safety information for rental buildings and areas is clearly and surely disclosed. Fifth, social interests about housing safety and financial burden of young one-person households are also needed.
