The pictures of paintings or prints have been used as educational materials in the traditional Historic Costume course. It was challenging to provide an effective learning process due to the difficulty of understanding the complex form of clothing and wearing process. Furthermore, when new and effective educational materials corresponding to informatization and globalization are required, interest and development in education methods and educational materials have been sluggish. Therefore, this study aimed to improve the quality of the Historic Costume course by producing 3D virtual costumes. The types of robes began to diversify, and the 18th-century French women"s robes, where the method of wearing robes was complicated, were the subjects of this study. Three representative robes such as Robe à la Française, Robe la Polonaise, and Robe à l"Anglés, which was selected based on comparative analysis of the three types of robes in the 18th-century French paintings and fashion prints "Galerie des Modes et Costumes Français 1778-1787". Using CLO, a 3D fashion design software program, robe patterns were developed; production simulation processes were carried out to create three types of 3D robes. As an educational material for women"s clothing in 18th century France, the 3D virtual costume is rotated back and forth of robes. It helps to understand the characteristics of the various Robes. The 3D costume can be explored in a three-dimensional manner from various angles and enlarged by parts to allow for detailed observation, increasing the understanding of details and forms and understanding wearing methods. The 3D digital costume will be an effective educational material responding to information and globalization as a new communication method by integrating costume history and digital technology.
